About Rota

What Rota lacks in world-class amenities it more than makes up in charm. A short hop from the neighboring islands of Guam and Saipan (a roughly 35-minute flight from either island), the island quickly becomes an instant favorite for all those lucky enough to discover it.

Rota Island Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

Unlike other destinations, hotel rates and plane fares generally remain constant throughout the year. The only thing you might want to consider is the time of year you choose to come as the island’s general weather may become uncomfortable for those not used to humid weather. The months of January to April are probably the least warmest months out of the year. The island also experiences a lot of typhoons during the months of May to November.

Culture & Customs

The island’s natives are called Chamorros, the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands. Many Chamorros speak English, but Chamorro is the language of daily life. Knowing a word or two in Chamorro goes a long way.

Since the Marianas is part of the United States, the local currency is the U.S. dollar and credit cards are accepted at most businesses. Tipping etiquette is slightly different if you come from the States. Most local restaurants usually expect a total tip of $1-$2, with a max $5 if you’re feeling especially generous. The only place where the standard 15-20% tip might apply is at the dining establishments at Rota Resort.
